5 gifts for a 5 - 9er

Are you wanting to get started on a year of adventure or has a loved one decided they need to spend some more time outdoors? Good. Here are some gift ideas to get you started - better get moving, it's Christmas next week.

1. Portable Mesh Fire Pit

These brilliant little gadgets allow you to light a fire above ground and leave no trace. They weigh between 1 and 3kg depending on size, and start at around £20.

2. MSR Hubba Hubba

The ultimate in lightweight tents. Weighing in at only 1.5kg this 2 man tent is a great place to start for a new 5to9er. Who knew it was possible for tents to weigh so little? And with this one you can peel back the top cover and do some serious stargazing. I haven’t tried and tested any other two man tents but my brother has this one and he’s in the army so I’ll take his word for it. Click on the link to learn more about the tent and to enjoy Dale from Mountain Safety Research say ‘Hubba Hubba’, many many times.

3. LuminAID — Solar powered travel light Luminaid offer a variety of waterproof, rustproof lightweight solar panelled lights for any type of adventure — they even charge via USB for the not so sunny trips (yes this also means you can charge your phone). Choose the ‘Give a Light to Get a Light’ option and for a couple of extra pounds, and a light will be sent to one of Luminaid’s humanitarian partners for refugee and disaster crises.

4. Travel backgammon set If you’re not travelling solo, why not while away the hours playing backgammon with your travelling partner. I’m seeing a river, oak tree and a couple of beers. This backgammon set from Jacques of London rolls up neatly and weighs next to nothing so you won’t mind the extra weight of your favourite drink.

5. Aluminium cooking set

Again coming in at less than 1kg (lightweight if you hadn't noticed is key), this neat little set of pans should be on the list for any new 5 - 9er.
